Fagles, the Arthur Marks '19 Professor of Comparative Literature Emeritus at Princeton University, was widely acclaimed for his popular translations of Homer's "The Iliad" and "The Odyssey," both of which became best-sellers. Born in Philadelphia and himself a published poet, Fagles came to classical literature and translation relatively late, or late for his chosen field. Here we have Homer's Odyssey as translated by the celebrated Robert Fagles, who died this past March. I was fortunate enough to have the opportunity to see La Jolla Playhouse's An Iliad, a re-imagining of Homer's epic poem The Iliad (the Robert Fagles translation) at the Mandell Weiss Forum. It is what fired my imagination for swords and sorcery books and Dungeons and Dragons. If you've never read the Iliad, it truly is one of the greatest works of literature. They form I recently came across the Robert Fagles translation and it strikes a good balance between the original poetic form and being understandable. One final note, I'm not one that huge on poetry, and the Fagles translation of The Odyssey is definitely in that format. The Iliad by Homer (Robert Fagles Translation). The events of The Odyssey are supposed to occur twenty years after the events of The Iliad. The performance I'm far more familiar with its follow -up The Odyssey, both because I read it at an older age, and because a fellow student and I took key scenes and rewrote them in modern tongue for a performance back in college (see I can be a dramaturge too). Homer's epic tale spanning some 52 days of the Trojan War, has always been a more daunting read than his Odyssey. He was He says that Fagles' Iliad ends with, "And so the Trojans buried Hector breaker of horses" (24.944). I've been scouring the web for people's opinions on the best translations of the greatest epics: Homer's Odyssey, Homer's Iliad, Virgil's Aeneid, and Dante's Divina Commedia. If you don't know, Homer's The Odyssey is a direct sequel and Virgil's Aenied tells another part of the story after The Iliad ends.
